Industry growth warrants increased production capacity
Phoenix, Ariz. – SealMaster, a Phoenix franchise that manufactures pavement sealer and distributes a full line of pavement maintenance products and equipment throughout Arizona, has announced it has moved to 2003 McDowell Road. The move was necessary to meet the state’s growing demand for pavement preservation products and equipment.
With more than 100 independently owned locations nationwide, along with pavement sealer, the franchise system distributes pavement crack sealants and repair materials, traffic paints, dust suppressants, tools, accessories, sport surfacing products, and machines to apply all the materials. SealMaster’s Phoenix fleet of tankers delivers pavement sealer and other products everywhere in the state. The company also drops off and picks up job-site sealer tanks, rents equipment, and services equipment.
Business owners Dave and Sue Musgrove and Dave and Daphne Boon have consistently increased production capacity over the years and ultimately outgrew their former location. SealMaster’s new home is 118 feet away – and across the street – from its previous location. The site is much larger, more easily accessible, and well suited for further expansion. Dave Boon, who came on board in 2001 and serves as the company’s general manager, led the charge with plant construction and the move.
He says having a blank slate to develop the company’s facilities gave him the opportunity to streamline efficiencies and prepare for future expansion. Facilities and mechanical systems were designed and built to accommodate additional equipment and utility connections when it’s time to increase manufacturing capacity again. The company dramatically increased production and reduced overtime to the degree it’s meeting demand without the need to have people work 14-hour days.
Serving a Huge Industry
Arizona’s warm temperatures allow for pavement maintenance work throughout much of the year. But April through October are extremely busy because overnight temperatures overwhelmingly stay at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer, a requirement for proper curing of many crack repair materials and all pavement sealers.
“We were expecting a significant increase in demand this spring, but it was a lot more and earlier in the season than we expected,” says Boon. “Fortunately the new facility enabled us to meet those demands on time and on schedule.” In Arizona alone, demand for SealMaster’s breakthrough Liquid Road bituminous surface treatment, which remains effective three times longer than conventional pavement sealers, is up 125 percent over the same period last year. Demand for another of the brand’s flagship products, Polymer Modified MasterSeal, has risen 50 percent.
SealMaster customers include public agencies responsible for maintaining their communities’ roads and other paved assets, private and public property owners and institutions, and pavement maintenance contractors, among others. Over the past decade, professionals charged with pavement maintenance have changed their approach from repairing and replacing pavement to one of maintaining and preserving it. It’s most cost-effective keeping good pavement in good condition vs. allowing it to deteriorate. Costs to repair and replace pavement in bad condition costs six to 10 times more than routine maintenance, which can extend the useful life of pavement by more than decades.
